The Ugliest Eddy Merckx EVER

This bike lingered in my memories for almost 20 years, and I just found pictures of it again here. Canadian rider Steve Bauer rode this bike in the 1993 Ghent-Wevelgem and Paris-Roubaix. The extremely laid-back seat tube angle and correspondingly long chain stays were meant to give an almost recumbent position for muscling the gears against the saddle’s backrest, with less weight being supported by the rider’s back and arms. Apparently Bauer finished 21st at Roubaix, but in the end he decided that the bike design was a net negative. I’d bet money that this bike wouldn’t pass a UCI inspection nowadays. I remember reading in a magazine at the time that Eddy Merckx was nonplussed, simply explaining that his company built the bike as requested by the Motorola team.

The following year Andre Tchmil won Paris-Roubaix with a Rock Shox fork bolted onto an otherwise standard Merckx frame.

Above at Ghent-Wevelgem; below at Paris-Roubaix with a Rock Shox fork.

Catrike 700 for 2012

by Larry Varney Co-Editor Have you ever looked at something, a car, a house, a person, and thought: no, that’s not for me. That’s not my style, that’s out of my league, that’s more than I want or need, and so on. And yet, when you get closer, when you drive it, when you walk [...]

Arkel Frame Bags for Catrike 700

by Larry Varney Co-Editor On most of my bikes and trikes I’ll have a rear rack mounted – on one I have an underseat rack, too – so you would be justified in thinking that I just have to have a way of carrying lots of things when I ride. Yes, I could cut back, [...]

How to build a recumbent trike out of bamboo

I was pretty much amazed when I found this tutorial of how to build a recumbent trike from bamboo poles. As same as when I saw another tutorial about making a recumbent seat from plywood, which was not onlyabout the seat itself but also about how to make a steam machine at home. Quite impressive. [...]

very old recumbent trike

I have found this picture of a very old recumbent trike on the blog called: Tricycle Fetish Blog. It is not a blog about trikes as we know them (or better, which are so normal for us) but a blog about tricycles for children use or for use as a toy. One reader is asking [...]

Oregon Trailer

by Larry Varney Co-Editor I have some interests that border on fetishes – lights, folding, and carrying things. Seldom have I actually ridden in the dark, but there’s always the thought that I might, which somewhat explains why I am always on the lookout for some new head and tail lights. I have a couple [...]
